Pontiac enhances G6 lineup with mid-year updates

The L.A. Auto Show is just days away, and as it draws near more models, updates and reveals are coming to light. Pontiac will be bringing a revised family of G6 coupes, convertibles and sedans to the L.A. Auto Show despite General Motors' widely publicized pull-out of its featured show vehicles.

Updates to the G6 range focus on efficiency, alternative fuels and improved value through added features. The mid-sized G6 will get updated exterior styling and reworked powertrains to achieve those goals, though the high-performance GXP models will only get the interior upgrade common to the entire range.

The G6 Coupe, for instance, will finally be offered with the 164hp (122kW) four-cylinder 2.4L Ecotec engine that's rated at 33mpg highway (7.1L/100km). The same engine is already on offer in the G6 Sedan, where it achieves the same fuel efficiency rating. The coupe also gets the company's new TAPshift manual-shift automatic transmission with steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters.

Markets that have high availability of E85 will also get a FlexFuel version of the 3.5L V6 engine, rated at 219hp (163kW), and the coupe will still have the option of the 222hp (165kW) 3.9L V6. The 252hp (188kW) 3.5L V6 found in the GXP models is the same as last year's model as well.

Exterior appearance features updated with the facelift include the front fascia, which gets a chrome surround for the grille. The rear fascias are also updated, accommodating both single and dual exhausts and larger exhaust tips depending on trim level. Seventeen inch chrome wheel covers are standard on four-cylinder sedans and coupes equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions. The Sun-and-Sound package will also get an updated 17" alloy wheel package.

Inside, the new interiors across the range feature new heating and air conditioning controls, an updated stereo with AM/FM/CD/MP3 capability and an auxiliary input jack. GM's MY LINK communications system gives the car Bluetooth capability, plus USB input for music player access. Dark satin nickel trim accents on the steering wheel, door panels and shifter plate plus two-tone seats in ebony/light taupe are available in both cloth and leather, which is a new option above the standard ebony seats. GT and GXP models als oget a new ebony-titanium leather seating package.

Pricing starts at $22,890 for the G6 coupe with the new four-cylinder option, while the E85 models start out at $24,125 for the sedan and the GT Coupe at $25,280. The 2009.5 G6 retractable hardtop convertible starts at $32,970.

Several Mercedes plant workers accused of corruption

Several employees at a Mercedes plant in Sindelfinger, Germany, are under investigation for corruption and bribery

Several employees of the Mercedes Benz plant in Sindelfinger are under investigation, following allegations of corruption and bribery, according to a number of German news sources. The beginning of a preliminary investigation was confirmed by the Stuttgart public prosecutor's office on Sunday, although no charges have been laid as of yet against the employees.

The first report of the allegations came from the German news magazine Focus, which reported that several employees had been caught intentionally producing defective cars. By producing these defective cars, Daimler's internal quality control measures would require an external company to repair the cars, and essentially the employees were drumming up business for this firm, with the firm allegedly providing rewards of expensive gifts and overseas holidays in return.

The preliminary investigation is attempting to ascertain whether the employees had in fact produced defective cars intentionally, however Daimler has already come out with a statement stating that there are no defective cars on the market, or defective parts. From what we can gather, this makes sense as the employees were allegedly producing defective cars with the key purpose of having them repaired by this external firm, and not with the purpose of intentionally releasing defective cars to market.

While there are no concrete facts or figures as to the number of defective vehicles produced, one German news source estimated that the losses incurred by Mercedes could be in the millions of Euros range.

Eco Cars: EVA – Aerodynamic hybrid vehicle betters speed, range and efficiency

Eco Factor: Hybrid vehicle powered by lithium polymer batteries.

Electricity alone cannot provide the speed and distance we require sustaining our lives in future. Hybrids can take over conventional fossil fuel vehicles without making us too slow in the process. Cobus Marx has designed a futuristic vehicle called the EVA (Electric Vehicle Africa) that can carry two passengers on its three wheels and a hybrid engine.

The vehicle enhances the possibilities of a cost-effective alternative approach to a personal transport vehicle. The vehicle is based on the future needs of the urbanized user who needs extended range at a high speed to travel long distances when needed. The vehicle’s specifications needed it to be extremely aerodynamic, which the designer accomplished by a height adjusting air suspension system.

When the vehicle is stationary the suspension is at its maximum height enabling the commuters to get in and out of the vehicle easily. When the car is running at a high speed the suspension drops down taking the car as close to the road as possible.

Large door handles of appropriate shape and diameter will help the user open and close the door with ease if the car has been parked in a congested space. The body of the car has been designed in a fashion to reduce drag at high speed, which again helps in increasing the efficiency of the car.

EVA is powered by a conventional 250CC, two-cylinder, four stroke engine generating 16 KW. This engine is coupled with a Li-ion polymer powered electric motor which generates an additional 120KW. Running on electricity the car has a range of 400 km at a top speed of 160 km/h, which can be enhanced by running the gasoline engine simultaneously.

The Dark Side:
The car can carry two passengers. With the growth in population, cars which can carry more and more people are likely to attract more customers in future. The ever increasing cost of fuel has already attracted many people to commute on shared basis. In such a time a car with two seats is unlikely to comply with the demands of the future.

2009 Nissan GT-R Series II upgrade rumours

Early details surrounding the updates for the Series II Nissan GT-R have surfaced on the web, which are expected to be introduced with 2009 production models.

The official announcement is expected to be made by Nissan on December 8, with the most crucial change being a price jump of 10 percent - exceeding earlier reports that there would be a 5 percent premium for MY09 models.

Engine output is expected to rise, albeit conservatively by about 4kW and the Brembo brake callipers will be rebadged to Nissan with stiffer brake hoses.
The fuel tank capacity will be increased by 2.8 litres while fuel economy has been slightly improved.

Other changes include a slight revision to the GT-R’s colour palette, opting for the new Brilliant White Pearl over the existing Ivory Pearl White which it will share with the 370Z.

Ultimate Silver will also attract a price premium, up AUD$840 to AUD$5,880 in Japan.

The wheel colour has also been slightly revised, although the extent of these changes is not yet known.

Finally, the Black edition will now be fitted with Dunlop tyres as standard with the Bridgestone tyres becoming an option.

Unconfirmed changes suggest JDM models will receive upgrades from their overseas counterparts such as European specification suspension and iPod connectivity from the US version.

The GPS-activated speed limiter will also be updated to include more locations across Japan.

The V8 Blender: World’s most powerful fruit blender

Some of you simply love Jeremy Clarkson, while others…hate him. Okay, hate maybe was a strong word, but let’s just say that not everyone is his fan. But regardless, Jeremy is quite a character and he does not cease to amaze me.
So, you might be asking yourself already: what did he do this time? What car did he crash this time? Well, fortunately for him, he stayed away from the track this time but decided to take a V8 engine on the TV set.

Why the V8 engine? Well, he decided to build the world’s most powerful fruit blender by using the powerful 430HP 6.2L V8 found in a Corvette.
The result? Watch the video.

P.S I wonder how a V8 twin-turbo would work in this case. ;))

2009 Nissan 370Z US specs leaked

Nissan had planned to release the full details surrounding its new 370Z model on November 19 to coincide with its global debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, however the official press release has been leaked slightly ahead of time.

The new Nissan Z Coupe is set to go on sale in the US from January 2009 from a base price of $30,000, followed by the Z Roadster in 2010.
Almost every part of the new Nissan Z has been redesigned, resulting in a shorter wheelbase, greater use of lightweight body materials, a new engine with more horsepower and improved fuel economy.

The 370Z is smaller than its predecessor in every direction to help reduce weight, coupled with the expanded use of aluminium for the door panels and hood.
The net result is a saving of around 45kg over the comparative 350Z model with rear body torsion rigidity improved by up to 22 percent and rear body vertical bending rigidity improved by up to 30 percent.
“As every race car driver knows, weight is the enemy of performance and rigidity is the foundation for handling – but they usually work at cross purposes from each other,” said Castignetti. “With the new 370Z, the engineers were able to build a body that is both stronger and lighter, enhancing Z’s athletic performance abilities.”
The exterior design intentionally incorporates 240Z styling cues, with a dramatic cantilevered roof gathering its inspiration from the Nissan GT-R.
The drag coefficient is just 0.30, which drops to 0.29 with the Sport Package - the same as the previous 350Z model. The new Z also maintains the previous generation’s zero front lift and zero rear lift when equipped with the rear spoiler, thanks to extensive aerodynamics efforts.

The distinctive ‘boomerang’ shaped head lamps and tail lights incorporate High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional xenon headlights with auto on/off feature are standard.
The 370Z is a true two-seat sports coupe, with an open cargo area for enhanced storage and accessibility in the rear.
The instrument panel retains the traditional 3-pod cluster with oil temperature, voltmeter and clock, while the speedometer and tachometer now include an “initial sweep” function, coming alive when the Z is first started.
Standard interior creature comforts include Push Button Start, one-touch power windows, a centre console box, automatic climate control, rear window defroster with timer, two 12volt power outlets, four cupholders (two in door panels, two in centre console), dual overhead map lights, lockable glove box and a 4-speaker audio system with illuminated steering wheel-mounted controls.

The 370Z Touring model adds 4-way power adjustable heated leather sport seats with adjustable lumbar support, 6CD Bose audio system with eight speakers (includes dual subwoofer) and MP3/WMA playback, Bluetooth system and passenger seat map pocket.
The new-generation 3.7-litre VQ37VHR engine with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) is rated at 247kW and 365NM at 5,200 rpm - almost a 20kW improvement over the previous model.
The larger capacity engine yields better power delivery all the way to the 7,500 rpm redline with improved low end power and more high-end torque.
The new engine is backed by a choice of two new advanced transmissions: a 6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic.

The close-ratio six-speed manual includes the world’s first synchronized downshift rev matching system, which automatically controls and adjusts engine speed when shifting to the exact speed of the next gear position, essentially “blipping” the throttle to smooth out any up/down shifts.
This function improves vehicle balance and smoothness by reducing the typical “shock” when the clutch is engaged, although driver’s who prefer less vehicle intervention can deactivate the system completely with a button next to the shifter.
“The SynchroRev Match system takes nothing away from the driver – you still have to engage the clutch and move the shifter – it just gives you a performance edge by smoothing out the gear engagement,” said Castignetti.
The new 7-speed automatic with Downshift Rev Matching (DRM) and Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) is designed to offer quick, manual-like shifting when operated in manual mode with a target time of 0.5 seconds between shifts.
Fuel economy is identical for either transmission, using 13.0l/100kms in city driving, and 9.0l/100kms on the highway - which is a slight increase over the previous Z car.

The double-wishbone front suspension (replacing the lower multi-link setup in the 350Z) uses lighter forged aluminium arms and a lightweight rigid aluminium-alloy cradle, along with a lighter stabilizer bar with a 35 percent improved lever ratio.
The standard 370Z wheel and tyre package features 18-inch staggered 5spoke lightweight aluminium-alloy wheels with P225/50R18 front/P245/45R18 rear Yokohama ADVAN Sport maximum performance rubber.
An optional sport package adds 19-inch RAYS forged lightweight aluminium-alloy wheels with Bridgestone Potenza RE050A P245/40R19 front/P275/35R19 tires.
The braking system has been upgraded to improve overall feel and brake fade resistance with 4-piston front callipers and 2-piston rears biting onto vented discs.
The new 2009 370Z’s model line-up has been greatly simplified, versus the 2008 350Z, with just two models – 370Z and the 370Z Touring.

MB to bring AMG Diesels by 2011 - a threat to BMW?

In a recent development, Mercedes’s tuning division, AMG, announced their plans to launch a diesel model within three years. Volker Mornhinweg, the boss of Mercedes’ tuning division describes the diesel  AMG engine as an updated version of the legendary AMG Hammer, a tuned up 5.6-liter V8 outputting 360 hp.
Following the current trend of smaller, lighter and implicitly more efficient cars, Mercedes is looking to use the new diesel AMG in smaller chassis, such as the C-class.

The E-Class could be another candidate for the super-diesel AMG, but of course, all it’s too early in the game to confirm that.

Now to move over into the BMW world, what are the odds that BMW will embrace the idea of an M car powered by a super-diesel engine? We are already seeing the large push for fuel efficiency with BMW’s own EfficientDynamics technology and especially with the recent launch of diesel engines in the U.S, it seems like BMW is looking to push the massive-torque diesels more and more.

So, let me ask again, what are the odds of seeing a BMW M3 powered by a superduper diesel engine? Would that make any sense? Would it “hurt” BMW’s image?

Zorba Lamborghini Murcielago Kit Car

Anthony from Carzi.com turned me on to this funky-looking kit car. Made by Zorba, the kit goes on a stretched Pontiac Fiero chassis (as most kits do.) Starting at about $31,300, depending on options, that doesn’t include rear spoiler, wheels, or system upgrades. They also make a roadster version.

Funny thing is, this kit actually looks pretty well made, but the headlights and weird hood and roof scoop ruin the whole thing.

MonoTracer Blurs the Line Between Motorcycle And Car

The Peraves MonoTracer blurs the line between motorcycle and car, providing the excitement of two wheels with the comfort of four in a vehicle that looks like something out of Star Wars.

The super-exclusive MonoTracer -- just 100 will be built next year, at about $70,000 a pop -- is a fully-enclosed motorcycle with training wheels. The carbon-fiber two-seater combines Porsche-like performance with scooter-like fuel economy, accelerating from zero to 62 mph in a claimed (.pdf) 4.8 seconds while still returning 65 mpg. With the perfect blend of performance and luxury, the MonoTracer just might be the sports car of the future.

And it was just named one of Time magazine's best inventions of the year.
Former SwissAir pilot Arnold Wagner has been playing with enclosed motorcycles since 1982, when he built a prototype of the Ecomobile. It looked a bit like a Tylenol capsule with wheels and used a BMW motorcycle engine for power. Wagner and his sons built more than 90 Ecos -- most were sold in Europe and Japan, although a few made it to America -- before a fire destroyed the molds a few years ago. Rather than give up or simply recreate the Ecomobile, Wagner and his two sons went back to the drawing board.

The MonoTracer sports a carbon fiber and Kevlar body reinforced with aluminum crash and roll bars. The engine cradle, retractable outriggers  -- they keep the bike from falling over at stoplights -- and steering head are aircraft-quality steel. Power comes from the same 1200-cc four-cylinder engine BMW uses in its K-bikes. The engine produces 113 horsepower, which may not seem like much until you realize the Monotracer weighs just over 1,000 pounds. Amenities include air conditioning and a full-on stereo.

Driving the MonoTracer is a lot like riding a motorcycle - twist the throttle and go - but it's got a clutch pedal instead of a lever. The MonoTracer will lean into corners at a superbike-like 52 degrees, while ABS and traction control will keep you from getting in over your head.

Toyota's Stellar Credit Rating May Be Downgraded

Toyota, the automaker with the best credit in the industry, may see its AAA rating cut by Fitch Ratings due to the "unprecedented challenges" in the economy. It would be the first downgrade for Toyota in a decade.

Fitch said it would review of Toyota's rating over the next several weeks. A lower rating raises borrowing costs for a company, which could hamper its ability to offer attractive incentives to boost sales in the U.S., where it reported losing money in the last quarter and saw sales fall to their lowest level since 1983. In Japan, Toyota sales are at their lowest level since 1981. As a result, Toyota has revised its global performance for the year.

Toyota's last rating cut was by Moody's Investors Service in 1998. Moody's isn't revising its rating on Toyota now.

Honda's outlook was also cut to "stable" from "positive," but retains it's a plus rating. Ratings for Honda and Nissan remain below that of Toyota.

Eliica Goes Vrooooooooming By

Too goofy becomes cool! Yep, that is the funda if the Japanese electric car Eliica is anything to go by! Designed by a team of students led by Professor Hiroshi Shimizu at Keio University, Tokyo, the Electric Lithium-Ion Car (ELIICA) prototype has been around since 2003.

The design of the car is absoultely unique. It comprises of eight wheels with the axles one in front of the other. All four tires in the front turn simultaneously to give a good steering radius. Now they are working on giving the same edge to the rear wheels for easy parallel parking.

Promising an amazing acceleration from 0 To 62 in just 4 seconds, the Eliica surpasses even the Tesla Roaster. The Speed model was designed in 2005 with some extra techology that ensures longer range and better handling. The speed right now is 230mph, but the team wants it to reach 250mph and create a world record. On the other hand, the Acceleration model gives a top speed of 120mph.

The development costs are around $400,000 but the market price (if the car ever gets there) is estimated to be close to $255,000.

6 Cool European Electric Cars Never Coming to the US

European Coachbuilding Goes Electric

The European tradition of coachbuilding—the manufacturing of carriages—dates back to the 1700s. These days, it refers to the high-end auto design firms, such as Rolls Royce and Ferrari, which build custom-designed specialty vehicles.
Like nearly every automaker in the world, coachbuilders are going green, by designing and building all-electric vehicles. Their electric cars are well suited to the congested streets of Rome or Paris, but don’t hold your breath for these cool electricity-powered rides to make it across the pond. By nature, the coachbuilders produce vehicles in limited runs intended for local markets.

1 Pininfarina B0 ("B Zero")

The B0's rooftop solar cells help top off the electric car's battery pack.

Design house Pininfarina, of Turin, Italy, showed the B0 at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. The B0 is four-seat, four-door electric hatchback—about the size of a Honda Fit. The car has a range of 153 miles and a top speed of 80 miles per hour. The B0 features solar cells across the roof and front fascia to top up the lithium ion battery pack. Acceleration is zero to 60 (kilometers not miles per hour) in a little over six seconds. In other words, zero to 37 mph in six seconds—not quite the pace of the Ferraris also designed by Pininfarina. The company is considering direct sales via the Internet, and will begin production as early as 2009, according to some reports.

2 UK Lightning

The Lightning is a screaming fast all-electric sports car.

The Lightning Car Company is Britain’s answer to Tesla Motors. The company aims to build an all-electric luxury sports car with classic British sports car design. The Lightning provides a top speed capability of more than 130 mph. The Lightning electric car was first unveiled as a prototype at the London Auto Show way back in 1999. It’s been totally revamped since that time. The company is offering a GT model promising zero to 60 mph performance of less than 4 seconds. The “extended range” version claims a range of 250 miles and a recharge time of only 10 minutes using a standard home socket. (Sounds optimistic.) Price is expected right around, ahem, $300,000.

3 Heuliez Friendly

The Friendly is available in 27 different variations with options such as body length, motor output, and battery type.

French coachbuilder Heuliez of Cerizay, France, recently revealed its mini minivan called the “Friendly.” There are 27 different variants with variable options such as body length, motor output, and battery type. Depending on these variables, the Friendly will have a range of between 60 and 150 miles, and a top speed of about 65 miles per hour. All versions are configured with three-seats: one seat in front and two in back. Heuliez, founded in 1920, has been in the business of electric vehicles for well over 25 years. It is starting to focus on EVs, after building chassis structures under contract for Peugeot, General Motors, and other carmakers. The company hopes to build 10,000 a year at its factory, with the first units rolling out in 2010. One warning: The motor lacks the power to climb hills with a gradient above 17 degrees.

4 Heuliez Pondicherry

Heuliez also recently showed the Pondicherry, a demonstration model of four-wheel neighborhood all-electric urban pickup. Production details have not been confirmed.

5 Karmann Quicc DiVa

The Quicc DiVa is an all-electric urban distribution van. The body is made of plastic.

You’ve probably heard of the Karmann Ghia, right? Well, Karmann, the German company with a century-old tradition of building cars from the ground up, is teaming up with DuraCar, a Dutch company, to produce the all-electric Quicc DiVa urban distribution van. The Quicc DiVa body and chassis of the car are entirely made of plastic. The company has plans to build up to 15,000 units per year.

6 Ford F-150 Ha-Pa

The Hi-Pa Drive system, built in the UK, can be applied to existing vehicle formats.

Okay, here’s a European-built electric vehicle system that could make it to the US—if an American car builder decides to use the Hi-Pa Drive. The Ford F-150 concept vehicle, shown at the 2008 Specialty Equipment Market Association trade show in Las Vegas, demonstrated a system that allows designers and builders to create an electric vehicle application by installing motors on all four wheels. Together, the four motors installed on the F-150 deliver 600 horsepower—greater power and torque than the 320-hp 5.4L V8 engine that was removed from the truck. The F-150 concept was built by UK-based PML Flightlink in collaboration with Ford. Any takers?

GM to sell its equity stake in Suzuki

A few hours ago, GM has announced that they’ve decided to sell their remaining stake in Suzuki Motor Corp. This probably comes as an effort to raise additional funds, after a couple of weeks ago the Detroit giant, which is going through its worst financial crisis ever, announced that it might have no funds left by next summer. GM plans to sell 16,413,000 Suzuki shares, which is equal to 3 percent of Suzuki’s shares, for around $230 million. GM was involved in Suzuki for the first time in 1981, when it purchased 5.3 percent of the Japanese carmakers’ shares. In 2001, GM was owning sligthly over 20 percent, before selling 17.4 percent in 2006.

According to both parties, this doesn’t mean the business relationship between the companies won’t go on: “We highly value our strategic relationship with Suzuki,” said Rick Wagoner, GM chairman and chief executive officer. “Despite the sale of our remaining Suzuki shares, this action will have no impact on our existing bilateral business relationships. We look forward to continue building on our success to date with our long-term partner.”

Buy a condo and get a free Lambo!

Miami developer Michael Samuel and Lamborghini Miami owner, Brett David reached an agreement which will give a free $260,000 Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder to everyone who buys one of the South of Fifth luxury residences. That sounds pretty good, huh? However, there’s only one minor setback: each of the seven condos available (out of 28) costs between $6-8 million. That’s about 30 Lambos. It’s true, for this money you get two penthouses with private roof top pools, two two-story beach house villas with four bedrooms and maids quarters, and three four bedroom beachfront units with maid’s quarters. But still, why would anyone who pays $8 million be more atracted to the project because of a Lamborghini?

“There is simply no other development like South of Fifth,” says Michael Samuel, principle of Samuel & Co., “and no other vehicle like Lamborghini. Melding the two is the ideal live/drive marriage for a very discriminating consumer. Our main goal with the South of Fifth project has been to ensure an unprecedented level of luxury within all aspects of the residences [..] Teaming with Lamborghini Miami furthers that special lifestyle.”

VW Delays Roadster Concept Launch

Say it ain't so! Apparently even Volkswagen is feeling the pinch in the auto market at present, despite its worldwide sales increase of 15 percent for the third quarter. As such it has decided not to release the mid-engined Roadster concept at the LA Auto Show next week, according to the U.K.'s AutoCar. The earliest we might see the Roadster would be in January at Detroit's NAIAS.

Volkswagen sources claim the delay is simply because they feel the Roadster will resonate better with showgoers in Detroit. But speculation says it's the economy.

The Roadster is expected to use a fuel-efficient four-cylinder along the lines of VW/Audi's 2.0-liter TFSI engine found in products like the GTI, Tiguan, A3, and A4. We'd love to see VW's excellent 1.4-liter twincharger (turbo- and super-charged) engine make its way into this little Roadster, especially as sources claim the Roadster will be very lightweight and feature an aluminum-intensive suspension and body. VW's EcoRoadster concept used a turbodiesel for torquey performance and stellar economy, another concept we really like. Either the twincharger or a turbodiesel in a light chassis would easily yield real world economy of 30+ mpg combined (probably 40+ for the diesel). Who said the spirit of the MR2 was dead?--Colin Mathews

Mercedes to include BLK SUV in upcoming B-Class

Earlier this year it was revealed that Mercedes-Benz was halting production of the current A-Class and B-Class after the current cycle and replacing the two aging models with a new family of small vehicles ranging from cabrios to sports coupes. We reported that this replacement would entail a whole new family of models consisting of four distinct variations, including a cabriolet, a coupe, a people mover and a soft-roader. Now Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that at least three of these variations will be made for the replacement B-Class, including a hatchback, a mini-MPV and a soft roader.

The soft roader will be known as the BLK, and CAR is reporting that it will be available in two trim levels - 'Street', for the majority of purchasers who don't actually require any SUV-capabilities, and 'Nature', which will be for those who intend to take the BLK into a more rough and tumble sort of environment. There has also been speculation that despite its off roader marketing, only the top of the range BLK models will actually have a 4WD system, while the base spec models would stick to front wheel drive. This will keep weight and costs down, and improve mileage figures for the end consumer. Weight for the range topping model will be approaching 3,500lb (1600kg), while the entry level model should be closer to 2,970lb (1350kg).

Currently, Mercedes has outlined a number of powerplants for the BLK, with many of them lifted straight out of the C-Class. There are expected to be three petrol versions and three diesel versions, and while the petrol and diesel models will share similar horsepower outputs, it is the diesel models that will return superior torque and mileage.

For example, the petrol BLK 180, with its 1.8L engine, will have 136hp (101kW) and 140lb-ft (190Nm) of torque, while the diesel BLK 180 CDI will also have 136hp but almost 30% more torque at 200lb-ft (271Nm). Similar results are found when comparing the other petrol engines in the range to the diesels:
- the 2.0L petrol BLK 200 has 177hp (132kW) and 214lb-ft (290Nm) of torque, while the 2.0L diesel BLK 200 CDI has 170hp (127kW) and 295 lb-ft (400Nm).
- the 2.2L petrol BLK 220 has 224hp (167kW) and 258lb ft of torque (349Nm), and the diesel BLK 220 CDI has 204hp (152) and 355lb-ft (480Nm).

Artist gone nuts: Perodua Myvi Cabriolet

This set of photoshopped images confirm that our resident graphic artist Theophilus Chin is a crackhead I suppose if Nissan and Mitsubishi can create drop top versions of their tall-ish B-segment hatchbacks (the Micra C+C and the Colt CZC respectively), it’s probably not too insane for Theophilus to dream of a drop top Perodua Myvi… or not! But seriously, Theophilus had nothing to do so he whipped up these photoshopped images just for fun. But what do you think? Would anyone buy something like this?

Dream car drag race pits GM's best Corvette ZR-1 against world class competition

Everyone's bashing GM these days. But the company has a few bright spots. Case in point: see what happens when you pit the company's fastest car, the 638-hp Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 against three of the fastest fancy-schmancy chariots from foreign countries. In a straight-line drag race, see who's your daddy, you Ferrari 599 GTB, Nissan GT-R and the Porsche 911 GT2. Ha.

When we hear talk of GM going away, we think of some faceless corporation cranking out bulky, gas-guzzling SUVs to fewer and fewer buyers. But then we see GM's Corvette ZR-1, a marvel of engineering achievement, leaving the likes of Ferrari in its dust, and we think, isn't there some way to save U.S. car companies from their own idiot bosses?

Sen. Shelby: How Sweet Is the Auto Business in Alabama? Not Very

Richard Shelby, the top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, took to the airwaves over the weekend as the chief opponent of loans to Detroit automakers. His premise: this is a Detroit problem not a national problem and taxpayers shouldn't subsidize these poorly managed dinosaurs.

"I don't believe they've got good management. They don't innovate. They're a dinosaur, in a sense, and I hate to see (them get government loans)," Shelby said on NBC's Meet the Press.

With all due respect Sen. Shelby, this is not only a Detroit problem. It's an Alabama problem. It's a national problem. And it's a global problem. Recession is spreading around the globe like a California wildfire. Once-hot auto markets have caught cold. And automakers everywhere - not just in the U.S. -- are asking their governments for a helping hand.

Indeed, taxpayers 'round the globe, including those in your home state of Alabama, have been subsidizing automakers all along.

Shelby's state of Alabama is home to a trio of auto assembly plants and their affiliated auto suppliers. Alabama lured automakers to the state by dangling millions and millions of financial incentives in front of them in the form of infrastructure construction and improvement, job training for workers and tax breaks for the auto companies. In fact, in every case, Alabama outbid other states with its attractive offer, like the $30-million training center that Honda said clinched the deal for its choice.

And all three of Alabama's auto plants are struggling as the sales slump spreads well beyond Detroit.

Daimler AG, for the first time in its 11-year history of producing vehicles in the U.S., is offering buyouts to all of its 4,000 workers at its Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in Vance, Ala. The German automaker has not said how many jobs it wants to eliminate.

At the same time, the plant has been trimming production for months due to slow sales of the trio of luxury SUVs it makes, the Mercedes-Benz M-, GL- and R-Class. Night shifts have been canceled and holiday shutdowns including Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas have been extended. Mercedes sales were off 25 percent in October.

Struggles for Korean-automaker Hyundai, which has a three-year-old plant near Montgomery, Ala., started late last year when it beefed up incentives to record levels to keep its plant, which has yet to reach full capacity, humming. At the same time, it cut daily production to keep inventories in check. Sales of the Santa Fe SUV that is built in Alabama were half of what they were a year ago; sales of Sonata sedan, redesigned only months ago to be even better than the Chevrolet Malibu, as executives said, were off 20 percent in October from year-ago levels.

Japanese automaker Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Ala., where it builds the Honda Odyssey and the Pilot. Throughout the year, slow sales of the minivan and SUV have forced the plant to scale back production. Odyssey sales were off a whopping 39 percent in October. Pilot sales were down 20 percent. Now Honda plans to add the Ridgeline pickup to the Alabama plant's mix. However, the truck has never lived up to sales expectations. Selling only a couple thousand a month, Honda reported Ridgeline sales 22-percent lower in October than a year ago.

Clearly, management at Detroit auto companies has made stupid mistakes, but Detroit car execs don't have a corner on bad decisions. Every foreign automaker building vehicles in Alabama is making SUVs there. None of them predicted gas prices would soar and decimate the market for SUVs any better than General Motors, Ford or Chrysler did.

Honda's bad bet for its lukewarm makeover of the Pilot, which retained its traditional SUV cues versus hipper crossover ones, was evident the minute Honda pulled the wraps off the SUV at the Detroit auto show earlier this year.

Daimler's decision to offer three SUV versions from the same basic platform, called badge engineering when Detroit automakers do it, was always questionable. And the R-Class always seemed like a dumb - and ugly - idea.

Let's remember the Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama is owned by Daimler AG, which still owns a piece of Chrysler, which could get a piece of any bailout Washington provides. And Daimler is the same company that managed Chrysler to near destruction and then sold to private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management last year for a loss. Now that's a stroke of management genius.

Without a Bailout of the Big Three, 3 Million Jobs could be lost

The waiting room at Markley Motors’ service department buzzed Tuesday as consumers waited for tune ups, oil changes and lube jobs. Some customers met with credit managers to extend their warranties.

But no one browsed the expansive South College Avenue lot during lunch hour looking for a new car.

These are tough times for local car dealers as the Big Three U.S. automakers look to Washington for financial help amid warnings their demise could lead to economic chaos.

Last week GM and Ford reported spending a combined $14.6 billion more than they took in last quarter; GM predicted it could run out of money by the end of the year and Ford said it has enough money to last through next year thanks to a hefty credit line arranged earlier.

Without a massive infusion of cash, automakers say nearly 3 million jobs will be lost, parts manufacturers will go belly up and dealerships will close. It all brings the problem much closer to home than Detroit.

Local dealers acknowledge some slump in sales as consumers worry about the economy, rising unemployment, food prices and the upcoming holidays.
“Between the gas crunch and the economy, it’s made it more difficult,” said Mark Matson, Internet sales manager at Ferrero I-25 Chrysler Jeep Dodge at the Motorplex at Centerra.

Sales dropped 20 to 25 percent this year, credit has tightened and fewer people are opting to buy new cars, he said.

New car registrations are down 5 percent through October compared to last year, according to Larimer County motor vehicle registrations.

The slump takes its toll on dealerships, employees and cities that depend on tax revenue from every new and used car sold.

Fort Collins’ tax revenue from cars purchased outside the city dipped nearly 7 percent through September and 4 percent for cars bought in town, said Jeremy Reese of the city’s sales tax division.

New cars are taxed more heavily than used cars because of their higher price tag, meaning a slump in sales results in lower tax revenue to pay for everything from police, parks and education.

“We don’t anticipate any increase in motor vehicle sales through the year and at least through the first three quarters of 2009,” Reese said.

The drop in auto sales tax revenue could indicate people are opting to buy used cars rather than new or not buying at all.

The changing economics has forced many local dealers to alter their business models.

At dealerships such as Markley, which sells Honda, Buick, GMC and Pontiac, sales are down nearly 120 units through October, said General Manager Roger Belisle.
But the service department has been crazy busy as customers put their money into fixing up and maintaining older cars rather than buying new.

It will be enough to offset the drop in sales, he said. “We anticipate being a little ahead of last year profit wise. Overall, I am not displeased.”
Traffic on the lot picked up the weekends before and after the election, indicating consumers may have been waiting to see who would replace President George W. Bush in the Oval Office before they went out and spent money on a new car.

The dealership sold 27 cars the past two weekends, which Belisle grades as a B-plus. “I’m not writing any letters home to mom to brag about my grades, but it’s a heck of a lot better than a C.”

At Ferrero, fewer cars dot the lot as management cuts back on its inventory, Matson said.

“Basically, if we had ordered 100 trucks a year ago, we probably ordered 60,” said Matson, who estimated sales are down 20-25 percent.

Tightening credit has left 10 to 15 percent of customers who typically would have gotten financing out of luck he said.

Still, Jeeps and Dodge trucks are selling thanks in part to dealer incentives and rebates.

Internet sales also have grown despite an overall 20 to 25 percent decline in sales.

“There is plenty of business to be had especially in Internet sales,” said Matson, who so far this year, has sold 243 cars online, comparable to last year.
Consumer worry is leading to cautious spending, Belisle said. “People now are more timid and not quite as anxious to make up their minds.”

Ar Foster of Fort Collins plunked down more than $2,300 she borrowed from a credit card to extend the warranty on her 2003 Buick Rendezvous SUV.

Typically, she leases a new car every few years to save herself the headaches that can come with older vehicles. The warranty on the Rendezvous expires Dec. 15.

Foster lives on a fixed income and can’t afford costly repairs or a new car.
Selling her SUV wasn’t a realistic option, either. “Can you imagine selling an SUV in this economy?” she said.

After talking with Markley’s finance department, “they convinced me I couldn’t get into a new car.”

The $2,300 will extend her warranty for three years giving her peace of mind and full coverage for major repairs, she said.

While many dealers are cautiously optimistic they can weather the economic storm, other dealers are reluctant to discuss sales at all.

Several dealers either declined to talk about their sales or did not return phone calls seeking comment.

“All the negative press that’s being written about it is just hurting the market and making it suffer that much more,” said Wendy Lampe, sales manager at Dellenbach, which sells Subarus and Suzukis.

“It makes people feel depressed reading about it and it just paralyzes more of the market,” Lampe said.

Sales of foreign cars seem to be faring a bit better, said John Carroll, president/owner of Ed Carroll Motors on South College Avenue.

Carroll’s sales are up 11 percent this year. Earlier, high gas prices helped push fuel efficient vehicles such a 50-mpg VW, which had a waiting list through the summer. As the economic slump worsened, Ed Carroll’s used vehicles started moving off the lot; sales for used vehicles are up 17 percent.

“To start with we were helped by higher gas prices because almost everything we sell is fuel efficient,” Carroll said.

“When the financial collapse occurred we had some short-term impact, but Volkswagen nationally is up 1-2 percent year-to-date. We were fortunate that we have the right brand at this time.”
VW is opening a new plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., at a time when almost every other auto maker is closing plants, Carroll said.

“It’s an extraordinary story … contrary to what’s happening with every other auto dealer and we’re benefiting through that with good sales.”

Insignia wins European Car of the Year

Vauxhall family car wins prestigious award by one point.

In one of the closest contests ever Vauxhall's Insignia has emerged on top - but only just. With a score of 321 it beat the new Ford Fiesta by one point. The latest car to come from the Luton-based manufacturer received 20 first place votes out of 59 compared to 19 received by the Fiesta.

This year 37 cars were put forward for COTY, with just seven short-listed for the ultimate award. Each contender must be on sale in at least five European countries. The Insignia is the first Vauxhall to scoop the award since the Carlton/Omega in 1987. The news couldn't have come at a better time for GM in light of its ongoing financial troubles, which have resulted in the company meeting with the German government to discuss plans for a bail-out.

Nissan Halves Amount of Precious Metals Used as Purification Catalysts

Nissan Motor Co Ltd commercialized the "ultra-low precious metal catalyst," which purifies exhaust gas using only half the amount of precious metals required by the existing catalysts, for the first time in the world (Fig 1).

The new catalyst will be introduced in the new Cube compact car, which will be announced Nov 19, 2008. The amount of precious metals used for the underfloor catalyst in the new Cube has been reduced from 1.3 to 0.65g. Still, the emission level of the new Cube is 75% lower than the 2005 exhaust emission standards in Japan, and the car has been qualified as a "Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SU-LEV)."

Of the precious metals used throughout the world, the percentage of platinum (Pt) used for automotive applications accounts for about 50%, while that of rhodium (Rh) is about 80%. In view of the limited amount of precious metals that can be mined and their rising prices, it is crucial to reduce the amount those metals used in vehicles.

In the existing catalysts, precious metals such as Pt cluster due to heat generated while the car is running (Fig 2). This reduces the surface area exposed to exhaust gas, hence impairing the purification performance. Therefore, the amount of precious metals had to be determined in such a way that the performance degradation may be compensated with the additional amount of precious metals.

On the other hand, in Nissan's ultra-low precious metal catalyst, physical partitions are provided around the substrate to avoid the reduction of surface area exposed to exhaust gas, which is caused by precious metal aggregation (Fig 2). This technique is applicable to Pt, Rh and Palladium (Pd) used as catalysts.
The ultra-low precious metal catalyst will be produced in Nissan's Yokohama Plant. The company plans to gradually expand the adoption of the catalyst in compact cars for the Japanese market, while considering the introduction in other types of vehicles and the sales in non-automotive sectors.

Nissan developed this technology in collaboration with Renault SAS of France and plans to introduce it in Renault vehicles in the future.

Nexter – An electric car for congested city lanes

Eco Factor: Lead-acid battery powered compact city car.
The Earth is not going to swell in the future to accommodate the growth in population and cars. City lanes are more congested than they ever were before and the situation is going to get worse in the near future. Car designers today are not just focusing on electric cars, but they have to keep the space factor in consideration before they bring the car of their dreams to paper.

Designer Florian FOIZON has addressed both of these issues in a future car called the Nexter. The car has been developed for a city tottering with space and environmental problems. The car is just under a meter wide and can carry two passengers. The car gets power from lead-acid batteries that give it a range of about 150 Km and a top speed of 90 Km/h.

The Dark Side:
In an effort to lower the cost of the car, Florian aims to power the car with lead-acid batteries that are not as energy-efficient as their lithium counterparts. Moreover, these batteries need some routine maintenance to make them perform flawlessly. Lithium batteries on the other hand, are maintenance free and provide a better performance than lead-acid batteries.
