General Motors spokesman Angel Sanchez said that the automaker will lay off 600 workers at its northern Mexico plant as a result of declining demand in the U.S. market. The cuts will be made during February and March at GM’s Ramos Arizpe factory in Coahulia.

“We are having to make an adjustment to our staffing due to the issue of demand,” Sanchez told Reuters. “Orders for the local market, but to a large degree for the export market, are coming down.”

GM has four plants in Mexico that staff some 13,000 employees making it the biggest car maker there.

Other car makers including Toyota, Nissan and Volkswagen have also cut production lines in Mexico in recent weeks.
