In its long-term viability restructuring plan submitted to the U.S. Treasury on Tuesday, General Motors said that it plans on adding two additional models based on the Chevrolet Volt’s electric-drive system.

GM didn’t go into specifics but said that it is investing “significantly in hybrid and plug-in vehicles.” it plans on increasing the number of plug-in hybrids to 14 in 2012 and 26 by 2014. “The Chevrolet Volt is included in this count, as are two additional models sharing the Volt‘s extended range electric vehicle (EREV) technology,” GM said.

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt is expected to hit the market late next year. GM said that while development costs on a vehicle like the Volt are high, it will allow for long-term benefits and increased efficiency for consumers.

So far, we know that GM will unveil the Opel Ampera, which is based on the Volt, at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show.
