There is no doubt that we’re excited about the upcoming 2010 Volkswagen Golf GTI. The 2.0 4-cylinder TSI making 207-hp should be more than enough for those who want to go a little faster. However, for true high-performance hatchback junkies it was the R32 that did the trick with its 3.2L V6 and an output rating of 250-hp.
According to CARandDRIVER, the R-Series Golf is back on the map with a new rumored badge - R20 Turbo. Sources say that the new R20 Turbo will be powered by the same direct-injected 2.0 turbocharged from the GTI but will be uprated to produce 270 horses. Power will be transmitted to all four wheels via a 6-speed manual allowing for a 0 to 60 mph time in the low 5 seconds with a top speed limited to 155 mph.
To set it apart from the GTI, the Volkswagen R20 Turbo will get an even more aggressive front spoiler, three large air intakes, an aggressive rear spoiler and two center exhaust pipes. It will debut with three-doors although V-dub is likely to do a 5-door variant.
The best part of it all? It will go on sale in Germany in late 2009 with the North American market to get it shortly after. That just made our Saturday.
