Porsche Gearbox

What sets the 2009 Porsche 911 apart from its predecessors is that it features a PDK gearbox that "can shift 60-percent faster than the Tiptronic system, and reportedly helps the 911 S lap the Nurburgring eight seconds faster than the six-speed variant." Continue reading to see the Porsche gearbox in-action.

Porsche has released a video explaining more about how the PDK works,
showing off the dual wet clutches that are simultaneously connected to two gears
so that when gear is engaged the next gear has been selected, essentially
providing instantaneous shifts.

ERA - Electric RaceAbout Based on Audi R8

Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia in cooperation with Lahti Polytechnic Institute of Design in Finland, has drafted a carbon fiber, lithium-ion powered sports car with a few components which are based on the Audi R8 which is known as ERA.

The electric powered sports car, ERA – Electric RaceAbout, will compete in the Automotive X Prize where participants are required to build and race a commercially viable 100 mpg vehicle.

The ERA will be powered by a Li-Ion battery packet technology powering all 4 wheels and able to accelerate the car from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 5 seconds with the top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph).

With a single charge, the ERA is expected to be able to be driven for 300 km (186 miles) while the target weight of the car is set at 1,250 kg (2,755 lb).

The designers are also hoping that the ERA could be produce on a small scale just like the other 11 research vehicles that were already been produced.

Mazda RX-9 Speculation

Rhoadwh, a Fomoconews forum member has posted his version of the new Mazda RX 9. The RX-9 is based on Mazda’s latest Taiki and Furai concepts.
The Taiki uses a front mid-ship design, which is what all RX-7’s have used in
the past and is why I chose this as my first starting point rather than the
mid-engined Furai.
Starting with the Taiki, I changed the controversial rear
quarter panel and boot to follow the rear quarter panel lines of the FD3S RX-7.
This created a large vent under the driver and passenger doors that could
function as cooling vents for the engine and transmission oil coolers. Then I
used design elements from the Furai to inject the racing heritage all RX-7’s are
known for. In the end, this created a vision of what the new RX-9 could look
like in 2012.
